Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens Tour

Presentation by Alan Rost

Zoologist / Biological Programs Registrar

The Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens is about to turn 100!  As Biological Programs Registrar, unofficial Zoo historian, Alan Rost, takes care of animal records and ensures that the Zoo has all the proper state and federal permits necessary to house the exotic animals that live here.

Alan came to the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens in March of 1989.  It became his mission to organize years and years of historical animal records…  He set to work cleaning, collecting, and re-constructing Zoo animal records that, unfortunately, were fragmented or even non-existent before the 1980s.  Alan devotes a lot of effort to determining where early animals came from, where they went after leaving the Zoo, and sometimes, whether the Zoo even had some species before reliable records began in 1977.

Alan has almost always had an interest in record keeping and history.  After having worked for 13 years in libraries and having received a Master of Science in Library Science, he’s learned a thing or two about doing thorough research.  Whether at work or at home, Alan is a real genealogy buff. He has traced the lineage of exotic animals and even that of his own family. He has a 5TH great grandfather that fought in the Revolutionary War, and two 2nd great grandfathers who fought in the Civil War.  With this interest and experience, it is no wonder that Alan has a knack for record-keeping at the Zoo.

Please RSVP to Michelle Rader no later than April 22nd at 904-371-8123 or micheller@c1cufl.org.
